Trees for Cities

Hello from Absolutely Bear HQ! We are so excited to share our latest news. As you may know, every year we give 1% of our revenue to non-profit organisations that exist to protect the planet. And if you didn’t know - head to 'Proud to be a member of 1% for the Planet' to learn more. This year we are so proud to announce that we will be partnered with Trees for Cities. We’re delighted that our 1% will go directly to an organisation so close to our hearts.

When you choose to wear the bear, you are not only opting for organic and sustainable fashion, but also contributing to our investment in the planet. As a brand we feel it’s not only our responsibility to have as low as an impact as possible, but also to give back to the earth by cultivating change.

What is Trees for Cities?

Trees for Cities is the only UK based charity that is working to make lives better by planting trees. They plant trees in urban areas where the social and environmental benefits have the greatest impact, engage with the community, and centre the local people at heart of every project.

With their hard work, they have managed to plant over a million trees since they were founded. As we know, the effects of climate change are already being felt; we experience warmer, dryer summers and colder, wetter winters. This has had such a negative impact on our trees and Trees for Cities is working to build resilience against threats facing our natural environment.

Their work falls under three categories:

·       Planting urban trees. Trees bring so many benefits to city life, including our health and wellbeing. Helping to encourage nature in our cities helps us feel less stressed and well restored. Did you know that London’s trees remove 2.4 million tonnes of air pollution each year? This is one of the many reasons why Trees for Cities is dedicated to planting thousands of trees every year.

·       Working with schools. Trees for Cities aims to educate children about where their food comes from by building edible playgrounds which helps improve attitudes towards healthy eating and provides schools with fresh nutritious food. Their ‘Planting Healthy Air’ programme helps address the issue of London’s poor air quality and gives children the everyday connection with trees and woods.

·       They also work internationally to send seeds and help grow trees that will flourish for generations. Working with community groups, they aim to provide long-term practical solutions and provide local people with the skills to create sustainable livelihoods. Trees for Cities planted an impressive 7,800 trees in Africa last year alone.

We need urban woodlands to not only to absorb CO2 emissions and purify our air, but to shield communities from noise and air pollution and provide quality habitats for city wildlife to support biodiversity.

Why have we chosen to partner with them?

Short answer – we love nature! Especially trees. Trees bring beauty and comfort to our lives and there are many incredible psychological benefits of being close to trees. They have a very important role decreasing our stress and anxiety. In the city, they improve the appearance of built up areas and add character to our landscapes. They reduce driving speeds and studies have shown that trees can reduce crime in urban settings.

However, in the city, trees can be few and far between and as a brand we feel so passionately about connecting the modern, city man with nature, which is why our partnership with Trees for Cities is a match made in heaven. We are always looking for new ways to connect with nature, therefore we jumped at the opportunity to get stuck in and support an organisation that connects us with nature.

At every stage of production with Absolutely Bear we aim to be as eco-friendly as possible, from our leave no trace packaging to our plastic free swing-tags. We believe designing clothing based around sustainability is one important way we can reconnect every day with the natural world we love.

    Paws For Thought

We know that planting and restoring trees can help combat the effects of climate change. Plus, more trees in our cities means cleaner air, less stress, more beautiful streets and green spaces and a greater connection with nature for us all.

There has been talk in the news recently about how planting trees can sometimes do more harm than good. However, we have full confidence in the experts at Trees for Cities to plant a mixture of the right trees in the right places. Engaging with the local communities and having them on board with every project is fundamental to success of tree planting.
